Tulsa man loses his life after being hit by unsecured lumber

A 53-year-old Tulsa man was killed Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, area police officials have confirmed. The fatal car crash involving two pickup truck drivers took place at the intersection of Sheridan and 13th Street at 10:00 a.m., that morning.

A full-sized local lumber company's truck was carrying loose pieces of lumber in its flatbed as it made a turn onto Sheridan off of 13th Street. As it turned the curb, the load of lumber that it was carrying become dislodged from the truck, striking the driver of the a smaller pickup.

Despite the fact that the area in which the incident occurred was a largely industrial area, city ordinances on the books require that all loads be properly secured in an effort to avoid an incident such as this. The police report shows that, in investigating the incident, it was determined that none of the wood planks had been properly secured.

It is believed that one particularly large plank slid off the back of the truck and penetrated the windshield of the victim's ensuing pickup. That driver was believed to have succumbed to his blunt force trauma to his head immediately on impact. The driver of the truck carrying the lumber was uninjured.

In the course of investigating the accident, the driver of the commercial vehicle alleged to have contributed to the victim's death was taken to the local police headquarters for additional questioning and for a blood draw. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the wrongful death, but criminal charges are pending results of toxicology testing.

This is only one unfortunate, real-life example of an individual who lost his or her life on an Oklahoma roadway as a result of negligence of another. Each day, trucking accidents like these happen all across the state.

If you or someone you know has been severely injured or lost his or her life as a result of a serious or fatal car accident such as this, an attorney's advice may be beneficial. In learning more about your case, he or she will be able to advise you as to how you may be eligible for compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, or loss of companionship resulting from your loss.
