Distracted driver has accident, now promoting driver safety

After an accident totaled his car while checking a text message, a former distracted driver is now crusading for laws to ban texting while driving. He avoided serious injury and more severe consequences, and he is now promoting driver safety by encouraging others to put down their phones while behind the wheel. This former distracted driver is making an effort to remind other Oklahoma drivers how dangerous it can be to take their eyes off of the road.

Texting behind the wheel, as well as other types of distractions, are some of the most common reasons for car accidents on Oklahoma roads. Just reading a text can result in a serious accident, as illustrated by what happened to this particular driver. He claims that he received a text, and in the time that it took him to read it and try to respond, his car veered off the road and eventually fell into a culvert.

Drivers who text behind the wheel may display some of the same behaviors as drunk drivers. It takes just one second to lose control of a car and to cause a crash. Just as drunk driving can have fatal consequences, the popularity of cell phones has led to an increase of fatal accidents related to distraction. At this time, Oklahoma legislators are considering several bills regarding the dangers of distracted driving, particularly texting and driving.

When an accident is caused by a distracted driver, victims may assume that they do not have grounds for a successful legal claim because of a lack of evidence. However, phone records and other forms of documentation can be recovered for the benefit of a civil claim. If it can be proved that texting or distraction was the cause of an accident, the responsible driver may be financially liable for physical and emotional damages.
