Oklahoma driver allegedly at fault in DUI crash

On Dec. 22, an 18-year-old driver was charged with multiple offenses in connection with an Oklahoma County car accident. Authorities stated that the 18-year-old driver who caused the crash may have been under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamine when the collision occurred.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., the driver's vehicle was observed weaving along the Edmond area containing West Covell and North Sooner roads. The law enforcement officer who observed this was in pursuit of the 18-year-old driver's vehicle when the driver reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle, which consequently flipped onto its roof.

The 18-year-old driver was assigned blame in the crash, officials indicated. A search of the driver's vehicle allegedly yielded 14 prescription pills and an undisclosed amount of marijuana. The driver admitted to smoking both marijuana and methamphetamine at a party prior to driving, officials claim. Officials also allege that the driver's vehicle had been reported stolen. It was not clear if anyone in the vehicle that flipped suffered injuries in the wreck.

The 18-year-old driver was taken to a hospital, where he was treated before being taken into custody. He faces charges of, among others, driving under the influence of drugs and possession and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

If someone from the flipped vehicle did in fact suffer a serious injury on account of the incident, a civil lawsuit may be in order. For, people injured in accidents caused by motorists suspected of driving under the influence of drugs are often eligible to receive personal injury compensation. In the event that irrefutable proof of impaired driving surfaces, an attorney representing the injured victim may make a strong case that the DUI motorist ought to be held liable for the financial damages stemming from the accident, citing negligence.
