2 dead, infant and mother injured in drunk driving car accident

A horrific collision in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has left two young victims dead after an alleged drunk driver plowed into their vehicle. The victims, two sisters ages 16 and 12, died while traveling along 21st Street on Aug. 9. The car accident was caused by an intoxicated driver who apparently crashed into a vehicle that was turning left onto an interstate entrance ramp.

Official reports show that the at-fault driver was speeding in her SUV on 21st Street when she ignored a red light and smashed into the smaller vehicle as it executed the turn. Five people were in the other vehicle. An 18-year-old was driving, his 16-year-old girlfriend was in the passenger's seat and their infant daughter was in the back seat. Also in the back seat were the girlfriend's sisters, ages 12 and 16.

The impact of the collision caused all three victims in the back seat to be ejected from the vehicle. The infant was reportedly restrained in a child seat, but that seat was not buckled into the car. The child suffered a skull fracture in the accident, and the mother was taken to the hospital with severe injuries including a punctured lung. Both are in stable condition, and the driver of the vehicle is slated to recover. The two other victims, however, paid the ultimate price because of the drunk driving accident.

The 38-year-old at-fault driver was taken into custody and charged with homicide. Authorities say that additional charges could be levied if more of the victims die from their injuries. The woman already had warrants out for her arrest at the time of the crash.

Drunk drivers do not have the right to take away the precious lives of young Oklahoma residents. Such drivers' irresponsibility is the cause of too many deaths in our area. Drunk drivers should face civil liability for their actions in addition to criminal sanctions for their poor decision-making. No one should have to suffer through this type of tragedy without compensation.
